PPSSPP is a free, open-source PlayStation Portable (PSP) emulator created by Henrik Rydgård, one of the developers behind the Dolphin emulator. It lets you play your PSP game ISOs and CSO files on Windows, Android, macOS, Linux, and iOS in full HD resolution or even higher, far exceeding the original PSP's 480×272 screen. Unlike many emulators, PPSSPP is an HLE (High-Level Emulation) based emulator, meaning it does not require a PSP BIOS file to run games. Beyond compatibility, it comes packed with enhancements: you can upscale textures, apply anisotropic filtering, enable post-processing shaders, use save states at any point, and remap controls to a keyboard, gamepad, or on-screen touch layout. The latest version (1.20.4) introduced improvements to ad hoc multiplayer networking, along with the usual stream of compatibility fixes and performance optimizations. With a large active community, broad game compatibility, and regular updates, PPSSPP remains the leading PSP emulator available on any platform.
No BIOS file is required to run games on PPSSPP — it uses High-Level Emulation (HLE) so you can start playing right away. You will need your own PSP game files in ISO, CSO, PBP, or ELF format. For best performance, a mid-range or better CPU is recommended, especially for demanding titles at higher resolutions.
